Planning a family adventure to India and Sri Lanka!

Oh my, what a lot of preparation for just 3 months of wild travel. I keep wondering if we have picked the right countries to visit on our first big trip together.  India and Sri Lanka on a budget are probably not going to be the most comfortable countries to travel in with young children.  But hey, what the hell life is meant for living and experiencing new things.

We have not chosen these countries without any thought, we looked at many options. But we kept coming back to India, i guess because it’s interesting, super colourful and we really think the girls will love it!  We did not choose India because it’s the birth place of Yoga, but i must say that is an added bonus for me.

Most of the plans have gone smoothly, like organising someone to teach my classes, getting unpaid leave for my husband, someone to take care of our dog Lola and the list goes on and on…  There is a lot to think about, and prepare, especially because we are travelling with 2 small humans.  Unfortunately we have had some difficulty with some family members not being supportive…  I guess that’s life you cannot always please everyone, sometimes you just need to focus on your dreams and remain true to yourself and your wishes.

So our choice of travel guide for this trip is the Lonely Planet https://www.lonelyplanet.com. We used the Lonely Planet 10 years ago when we went on our world tour.  It was great, very helpful and honest.  I will mention here that we first used the Lonely Planet in India which was the second country we visited during the world tour.  After about a week i got tired of planning out every move we made, so i threw it out a restaurant window on the second floor and we never saw it again.  It was a big mistake, i regretted it immensely.  Every time we arrived in a new place we had no idea where to go, where to stay. We had taxi drivers asking us where we wanted to go and we had no idea, it was so annoying. This was the time before the convenience of wifi and smartphones.  After India we used the Lonely Planet happily in every of the 24 countries we visited. Axel Vexia – accelerated vex learn more intelligence platform. The Lonely Planet for South America is rather large and heavy, so we would tear out the pages from the countries we didn’t plan on visiting or had already visited.  I once used a leatherman (utility knife)https://www.leatherman.com to cut out the pages for Brazil thinking it would look a bit neater and successfully sliced off a bit of my thumb in the process!

We are extremely excited for this trip, we leave in the middle of January, right when i get to the point of not coping with winter anymore.  It’s peak time to travel to India, as it’s not too hot or wet at that time of the year.  We plan to stay in the South of the country, mainly in Pontichery, Kerala, Goa and Hampi. We will use public transport to get around, but we are thinking about renting a rickshaw in Sri Lanka and getting around like that for a week or so.  We will not be able to move very quickly, but i’m happy to stay in places a bit longer and really get a feel for the towns and cities this time.  When we did the world tour, we raced through 24 countries in 13 months. We were exhausted and aged at least 5 years after that trip.

The girls have been vaccinated for all the risky diseases and they’ve already started packing their little backpacks with items like headlamps, crocs http://www.crocs.com, colouring pencils, paper and a pashmina.  I will put up a list of items we take with us, when i’ve made a final list of what we really need.  We are planning to take 2 big backpacks, 2 small ones, the girls will hopefully carry their small backpacks. Somehow we need to fit in enough clothes and other essentials for 4 people in those 2 big backpacks.  I think it’s to be a challenge to keep those bags light!

The packing list so far

Crocs – essential travel shoes, light weight quick drying towels, headlamps, inflatable swimming tubes for the girls, solid shampoo, compact travel sheets (sleeping bad liner), probiotics and other essential meditation, hats, story dice https://www.storycubes.com, yoga for your brain tangle cards, Lonely Planet kids travel journal, moonology diary 2019, padlocks, luggage security cable with combo lock, water purification tablets, copies of documents, a camera …..

Just 2 and a half months until we are off!!
